Mandalas and Itajime- Patterns of Time and Space-In Studio Workshop
Richard Carbin (aka AsiaDyer) and Glennis Dolce (aka ShiboriGirl) to combine their inspiration and practice into 3 days of dyeing fun and fabulosity.
Where you ask? In Long Beach CA.
When you say? February 15,16,17
(Saturday, Sunday & Monday) 9 am -5 pm
What you wonder? Mandalas and Itajime- Patterns of time and space.
$450 for the 3 days
Workshop is limited to 6 students for optimal individual attention and space.
What will be covered:
Mandala and itajime dyeing techniques on both vintage silk and cotton sarashi (Japanese wrapping cloth/toweling) using acid dyes (silk) and procion MX dyes (cotton).
Day one and two will have you learning techniques for folding and tying and preparing cloth for mandalas and itajime.
Day two we will begin the dyeing and upon discovering your results, you will prepare more cloth for dyeing with a better understanding of the possible outcomes.
Day three will be a free dye day with the supervision and help of both Glennis and Richard as you practice, hone, and combine your newly acquired skills.
This is a dye and pattern technique class- not a project class. Feel free to bring your own fabrics for day three experimentation. (we will also have various dyeable fabrics for sale- all fabrics for day one and two are provided.)
Lunch is provided but feel free to bring your own especially if you have personal dietary restrictions.
Bottomless tea, coffee, and mizu (water) and osembe (rice crackers) and of course donuts (Richard operates best on donuts and tea!)!
This workshop is rain or shine, hot or cold so be prepared. We will work indoors and out. So Cal weather is generally lovely but nature can be unpredictable... be prepared. (I work rain or shine and you can too-just be open to being flexible and wear layered clothing.)
We will also have a trunk show of our work in addition to a selection of special vintage items from Japan.
You will receive an email confirmation of your placement in the workshop within 48 hours of signing up (if not sooner). If you are flying into the Long Beach Airport (5 minutes away) we can provide transportation to and from the airport. There is a nearby airport Marriot that is also very convenient. There are bicycles available to you to ride to and from the Marriot if you want to get in a little exercise and avoid a car rental. (we can also arrange a transportation to and from the Airport Marriot each day)
If you have any questions, just let us know!
